UK Poker Players Fall Foul the Law

There may be plenty of poker games falling foul of state and federal laws in the United States, but now an English league has become the latest victim of strict legislation.

The people of the town of Trowbridge had been expecting a new poker league to keep them entertained, but now it seems that they are going to have to wait, after the organisers overlooked a 1968 law which states that poker is ‘a game of chance’. This means that they cannot charge a match fee or play any games in public spaces such as pubs and clubs.

Walt Sampson, who came up with the idea as an alternative for darts players taking their summer break says that he’s hugely disappointed. He had already paid out substantial amounts of money for chips and other poker toys that are now likely to sit in his garage until he can come up with a new plan.

According to the UK Gambling Commission, “Any individual who engages in a poker tournament held in non-casino premises will not enjoy any regulatory protection.' Any plans for a poker league in Trowbridge are now definitely off the table.
