Business as Usual at Absolute Poker

Absolute Poker, a privately held business and a large poker room, has issued a statement concerning the new legislation which prohibits US players from gambling online in games of chance.

The statement said that Absolute Poker has sought legal advice and has decided that its core US-facing online poker business will remain unaffected by the Act.

'It is the belief of our legal and executive team that online poker is a game of skill,” the statement read, “and the prohibitions signed into law on October 13 by the President of the United States neither apply to online poker nor our business.”

Absolute Poker highlighted its position as a privately held operation, alleging that this gives their business model more flexibility than some of its publicly held counterparts. “Furthermore,” the statement continued, “the Safe Ports Act passed by the US Congress on September 30 neither prohibits nor makes it illegal for any US customer to transact with AbsolutePoker.com and therefore customers experience at AbsolutePoker.com will not change.”

The statement ended with the company saying that they would explore available options where payment processing is concerned, suggesting that many of their payment providers’ transactions are carried out “within the framework of the international banking system, which the US Congress has no control over.'
