Student to Return to School Following Bellagio Cup Victory

21-year-old civil engineering student Shannon Shorr won the Bellagio Cup competition in Las Vegas this week and was awarded $960,000. The win, which brings his total earnings to over $1.3 million, has left him wondering whether continuing with his education is in fact his best bet.

Shorr was planning to return to school after finishing 577th in the World Series of Poker Main Event. Instead, he decided to buy into the Bellagio Championship for $10,000 and has decided after taking some time out to play poker, he will now re-enroll at the University of Alabama this autumn.

Shorr is, however, still pursuing the top spot in Cardplayer.com's Professional Poker Player of the Year Contest. Cuurrently, Shorr is in their position, trailing Phil Hellmuth Jr. by only 63 points.

The Bellagio Cup victory was the latest in a string of successes during 2006. In January, Shorr wom $203,000 after final tabling the main event of the Australian Poker Championship, finishing fourth and a week later he finished 2nd in the Canadian Poker Championship in the Bahamas for $75,000. In March, he final tabled the $500 R+A event in Vienna, Austria for $10,000 and in May he made it to the round of 16 in the World Heads-Up Poker Championship in Barcelona for $6500.
