Day Five at the WSOP’s Main Event Leaves Just 45 Contenders

Of the 8,773 members of the starting field, 135 players made it as far as day five of the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and at the end of the day’s play just 45 remain.

Tournament directors expected less than 50 players to survive the day and a number of early knock-outs proved their estimate to be about right.

With only a few big name poker pros remaining in the field, the chances of one pro knocking out another seemed implausible, so when Jeffrey Lisandro eliminated Annie Duke from the runnings, everyone was taken aback. Duke finished in 88th place and took home $51,129 for her efforts. Last year’s champion Joe Hachem finished a lowly 243rd after going all-in on pocket aces, only to be trumped by his opponents three Jacks.

Another highlight was the performance of Jaime Gold, a television producer from California, and former talent agent for The Sopranos’ James Gandolfini and Desperate Housewives’ Felicity Huffman. As the chip leader when the action begun, Gold flitted in and out of the top spot on a number of occasions, but battled back each time.

Only three big name pros remained at the day’s conclusion – Jeffrey Lisandro ($2,995,000), Cunningham ($1,290,000), and Humberto Brenes ($565,000). Other notables eliminated during play included Casey Kastle who finished 119th ($51,129) and Thomas Wahlroos, with a 91st position finish ($51,129).
