New Book to Tackle Poker Problems

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas is well underway and some 7,000 people are expected to attend. Many of these competitors will be twenty-somethings, playing for months in their student digs or at local tournaments with the dream of their first gold WSOP bracelet. The reality, for most, will be quite different.

With estimates suggesting that one out of every three college students are playing poker, some casually, some seriously and some dangerously, a new book aims to provide parents with the means to find out whether their child’s poker playing could be problematic.

In her book, Talkin' About Poker: Straight Talk for Parents and their Players, parent, educator and author Loren Ackerman acknowledges that it is not the case that all poker players may go on to develop an addiction. Rather, she suggests that parents need to carefully observe their child’s poker behaviour.

The book also addresses popular myths about the game, tips for identifying addiction and whether the game can be considered a sport.
