Poker Players Take to the Streets

Poker players and supporters disgruntled by the decision to prohibit online gaming in the US will this weekend take their argument to the streets of Washington DC in an attempt to make their voices heard as a unified force.

Led by lobbyist Debbie Richardson, the two rallies will meet today and tomorrow at 9am in front of the Washington Monument. The protestors will then walk from there to Pennsylvania Avenue where Richardson has reserved the pavement in front of the White House for demonstrations. Richardson has also reportedly secured a secret guest speaker for the occasion.

Richardson hopes that the demonstration will encourage President Bush to revise or remove the online gambling related part of the Port Security legislation which she claims, having been attached to seemingly unrelated legislature and rushed through the Senate, has a number of legal loopholes.

Richardson joins the likes of finance lawyer Jim Perkins, who devised an online petition against the Act, in starting a grassroots battle against the inclusion of poker on the new legislation, posturing it as a game of skill which should therefore be exempted from the rule. Perkins’ petition is gathering pace with over 11,000 signatures recorded.
