WSOP Champion Jamie Gold Defends His Position

Reigning World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold is disputing a lawsuit's claim that he must forgo half of his winnings from the Las Vegas event.

Bruce Crispin Leyser, a TV executive who has filed the suit, alleges that Gold made a verbal promise to present half of his winnings to Leyser for his role in the champion's World Series of Poker participation.

Gold maintains that he was only required to wear promotional clothing in exchange for Leyser offering his WSOP entry fee, and his financial agreement represents 'nothing more than a promise to make a gift.'

Leyser's attorney commented that since Gold has finally made his position on the matter clear, he believes his client is now one step closer to getting his alleged half of the $12 million top prize. 'We're glad they finally took a position,' said lawyer Richard Schonfeld. 'Even though we were extremely confident in our case, we are more confident now that we will prevail.'

A ruling is expected before the end of the year. In the meantime, Chief District Judge Kathy Hardcastle of Nevada has frozen Gold's winnings.
