Women best at faking a poker face

Think of women and poker and chances are a raft of stereotypes will spring to mind – and this could end up being your downfall.

While men may perceive them as submissive, women are in fact increasingly dominant in the world of online poker, according to research by Pokerteam.com

A third of online players are now women and many of them go on to scoop the top prizes by subverting sexual stereotypes to their advantage.

Men expect women to play a "weak" game and are then confounded by the increasingly aggressive tactics employed by female players.

This backs up previous research by Amanda Dickman, a professor of social psychology at Purdue University in Indiana, who claimed that women are subverting the gaming field by displaying "male" traits.

At the same time, commentators claim that a "feminisation" of online gaming has opened the sector to women.

Gaming websites are perceived as less intimidating to women than real casinos well the prominence of tips and strategies make the sites attractive to beginners.
