Middle-aged women favour online casinos

A survey whose results were released last month found that middle-aged women use online casinos more than any other gender or age group.

The study by the International Gaming Research Unit and Nottingham Trent University took in 10,865 people from 96 nations and came up with this surprising finding.

Online poker players, however, are typically men aged between 26 and 38, who outnumber women players of the game by almost three to one.

Of the female predilection for casinos and the general draw of online gambling Professor Peter Collins, director of the Centre for the Study of Gambling at the University of Salford, suggested to the Scotsman: "Women may be a little intimidated by table games. Slots are something they can do in private.

"It may be simply like the case of women not liking to go into betting shops. For all sorts of reasons people prefer doing gambling on the internet rather than in real life. They like the anonymity, for example."

The survey found that convenience and accessibility were named the best things about online gambling, with fun and excitement coming in second place and the financial awards associated with winning coming third.
