Poker Portal Stunt Leaves Players Confused

It might be the stuff of April Fools, but a hoax set up by a Canadian poker portal left the community somewhat disgruntled to find out that they had fallen foul to a publicity stunt.

The PokerBandits.ca website reportedly covered their site with fake FBI, US Department of Justice and Canadian government banners, announcing that the site had been closed down.

With the recent Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act lurking in the back of people’s minds, a flurry of concerned journalists, as well as legitimate portal owners, started to contact US and Canadian government officials.

The anonymous owners of the Canadian site eventually admitted the website banners had been intended as a joke.

'We apologise to all for any inconvenience that may have resulted by our recent hoax,” said the site’s webmaster in a statement. “However we found it necessary to perpetuate given the current state of online poker in the United States.'
