TV boosts poker interest in Germany

The popularity of poker in Germany has boomed in recent years with the German Poker Players Association now reporting 260,000 active players.

The game's rocketing status is directly attributable to the increased televising of matches, reports Deutsche-Welle.

Michael Koerner, a commentator on German sports channel DSF, explained the hook of broadcast poker. He said that camera-angles allow the onlooker to be privilege to information not held by any other of the players alone. Mr Koerner observed: "The viewer becomes omniscient and this lets him get very close to the game."

Thanks to the level of interest in Germany, organisers have just announced that the 2007 European Poker Tour (EPT) will be held at the Casino Hohensyburg in Dortmund from March 8-11th. It is the first-ever EPT event to be held in Germany and will be televised throughout Europe.

Poker's popularity on television has also led to an increase in online gambling. With DSF planning to broadcast 800 hours of poker by the end of 2008, it is likely that web-based poker in Germany will continue to flourish. DSF reaches an average of 200,000 viewers with each tournament.
