Wednesday 7th March 2007 All systems Goa for first professional poker tournament
The first ever Asian Poker Classic (APC) held in Goa has finally put India on the poker map.
On March 4th it may have been Denmark's Carl Hostrup who scooped the jackpot but the Indian nation did itself proud. The three-day event saw 143 players from over 15 countries battling it out for the $1 million prize in luxurious surroundings at Goa's five-star Intercontinental Grand Resort.
Professionals who attended included Ross Boatman, Roy Brindley, Mark Goodwin, Issac Gulazan, Arshad Hussain, Mel Judah, John Kabbaj, Lee Nelson, Jani Sointula, Surinder Sunar and Willie Tann.
The tournament was not only the first of its kind for India, but its payouts ranked among the largest in poker history, with sponsors MaharajahClub.net pledging a minimum $1 million prize pool and a $250,000 overlay.
The tournament showcased newcomers Team Maharajah - a formidable group of predominantly Indian players. Five of the Asian players finished in the money, with Pranav Bathija of Mumbai taking third place overall behind Samuel Lehtonen of Sweden.
"Poker is a global sport with players from almost every country around the globe. And now India has taken its place as a viable poker destination," said Imran Hassan, director of operations for the APC.
"We are extremely proud of the success of this year's Asian Poker Classic and hope that it provides the platform for the future growth and development of the game in India," he added.
