Florida Reps to Attract Poker Tournaments

The Florida state house and the senate are processing a bill to allow large multi-day poker tournaments to the states’ card rooms. It is hoped that approval will be granted in May, and the law could take effect in July.

Because the House only meets for two months a year, failure for it to pass that stage may mean the death of the proposed changes. Democrat sponsors, Senator Steve Geller and House Member Joe Gibbons, hope for a new market for the tourist industry.

The bill will not introduce any changes to the regulation of cash ring games in the state, where betting being limited to $2, with a maximum of three raises per hand. Despite this, poker remains very popular in Florida.

The problem for large-scale tournaments would be the hours of operation, which are limited to between noon and midnight. Cardrooms located at racetracks can only operate when events are taking place.

Kristin Carter, legislative aid to Gibbons says, “Poker’s gotten big, and lots of people travel to these tournaments and we would love to have them come to Florida and patronise our districts.”
