Police hold up NI poker championships

Police in Ireland have frustrated poker players by blocking the Northern Ireland Poker Championships from taking place.

The Gardai (Irish Police Force) stopped the championships from going ahead just one hour before the tournament was due to start and the move is expected to have widespread implications for the game in Ireland.

Officers entered the City North Hotel in Gormanston, County Meath near Dublin, and informed hotel managers that if the property was used for a poker festival the licence could be revoked. No alternate venue was available and the competition was abandoned.

Due to begin on March 16th, the venue of the Northern Ireland Poker Championships had been moved from the province of Northern Ireland to County Meath, over concerns about legality issues. Players, some of whom had travelled from as far afield as Austria and Poland, have now had their fees refunded.

The championships consisted of a £1,000 buy-in three-day Main Event, a £500 freeze-out and a £250 freeze-out, with a prize pool guaranteed at £100,000. A charity game due to take place on March 15th was also cancelled by organisers, who announced that they would make a donation instead to the Simon Foundation.
