Tuesday 20th March 2007 Iraq Veteran Crowned EPT Poland Champion
Peter Willers Jepsen, a Danish online poker player who found the game after sustaining a serious knee injury whilst serving in Iraq, has been crowned champion of the EPT event in Warsaw, Poland.
Jepsen who served in Iraq, sustained a serious knee injury when the diplomats he was protecting were targeted by a car bomb. He searched for new activities that wouldn’t aggravate his injury during his long convalescence. He found poker.
“Winning money is great but I really, really wanted to win this. I made $165,000 at a tournament in St Kitts last year, but I didn’t win it - it’s important to me to have this title.”
Jepsen took home €325,633, after battling past runners up such as German professional Katja Thater from Team PokerStars, in 5th place. Farid Meraghni from France took 2nd place, and John Conroy, from the UK, was third.
In other news, Croatian Law student Branimir Brunovic has won the 2007 Party Poker.com European Challenge. The Spring Poker Festival at the Concord Casino in Vienna, Austria hosted players from all over the world.
'I play in as many tournaments as I can but this was the greatest experience and by far the biggest win I have had,' said Brunovic, who is optimistic about the potential of the game in his country. Having qualified online, he wrestled the €190,160 prize from German pro, Andreas Krause.
