Poker players battle ban

Poker players in the United States have formed a coalition to fight against attempts by the government to ban them from playing online.

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is lobbying in Washington against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which makes it illegal for financial institutions to deal with transactions from online gaming sites.

Las Vegas-based gambling attorney, Anthony Cabot, has called on poker players to show their support for attempts to overturn the bill by joining the PPA.

The federal legislation, which effectively bans online gambling in the US, was passed by Congress in October 2006 and the PPA is now calling for the UIGEA to be overturned or amended to include an exemption for online poker.

PPA subscriptions go directly towards the campaign against the UIGEA and thousands of poker players have already joined the organisation, which has set a target of one million members.

A statement on the PPA website reads: "You are poker's most important and influential advocate. Your elected officials have an obligation to respond to your opinions and they need to hear from you. Call, write or visit your congressperson and ask them to support a poker exemption."
