Germany ordered to rethink online betting ban

Germany has been rapped across the knuckles by the EU after the government proposed a ban on online gambling.

The country may face legal action if it does not rethink its inconsistent attitude, which allows horse racing but wants to stifle all other forms of online gambling, including sports betting and casino games.

An official from the EU Commission told Reuters: "We think a proposed total ban is disproportionate and there are less restrictive measures, such as mandatory prior registration and strict guarantees on identification."

He added: "We feel Germany has not provided sufficient data that justified the total ban."

Guenter Verheugen, the EU's industry commissioner, has now written to German states advising them they had a month to alter their draft legislation.

The warning comes after Denmark, Finland and Hungary have already come under fire from the EU for trying to block foreign gaming companies.

The UK and Austria, whose online gambling industries are notable, were among the first to challenge Germany's proposed ban.
