Terrorists same as poker players says FBI agent

Joe Navarro, a former special agent, says that the interrogation skills he learned during his 25 years with the FBI can be used to decode poker tells.

Navarro used to interpret the physical behaviour of spies and terrorists under questioning to detect when they were lying, but while filming a documentary for the Discovery Channel with poker pro Annie Duke, he learned that his training also enabled him to tell when poker players were bluffing.

Since then Navarro has launched his own poker website and collaborated on a book with ten-time World Series of Poker champion Phil Helmuth, titled Read 'Em and Reap: A Career FBI Agent's Guide to Decoding Poker Tells.

Now the former agent is passing on his skills to poker players at the new World Series of Poker Academy, where students will benefit from his expert knowledge, as well as learning skills from poker greats such as Greg Raymer and Scott Fischman.

Navarro told Casino City Times: "Non-verbal behaviours don't change. It doesn't matter if you're playing poker or you're interviewing a terrorist. At this academy we combine the theoretical with the practical, and give insight into the science of how the brain works and how that translates into non-verbal behaviour."

However, the retired FBI man says that it is still difficult to read the likes of legend Phil Helmuth, who has mastered the ability to mask some readable behaviours.
