Police Shut Down Tournament in Sweden

Last week we reported that a tournament in Ireland was called off minutes after it had started. This week, over 700 Swedish poker players were disappointed at the 2007 European Poker Challenge in Sweden when police adopted the same approach.

Police made two arrests and Prosecutor Linn Scholander has stated that the two principal organisers will be kept in custody until their criminal trial. They may face a penalty of up to four years imprisonment.

Over 700 players had paid a €250 buy-in, and the tournament, which was set to be held in Grebbestad, would have been one of the biggest in Europe. However, the claim that it was unauthorised and illegal, as profit, rather than charity was the motivation.

While Irish players received some compensation and a nominal 10% of buy-in to compensate for lost potential winnings, it may be that the players disappointed in Grebbestad will receive nothing.
