Tony Guoga wins Betfair Asian Poker Tour

The first ever international poker tournament to be held in Singapore came to a heart-warming conclusion at the weekend as Tony Guoga won the inaugural Asian Poker Tour, and donated half of his winnings to local charities.

Guoga took control of the final table of the tournament from overnight leader Samuel Lehtonen and from local hero Joshua Ang to win $451,200, before stating that he wished to donate half of his winnings to charity.

The champion said, “I want people to know that poker is sport. This is not a large amount compared to what people like Bill Gates give to charity but it is a gesture to show that it’s not all about the money, it’s about the competition as well.”

The money will now go to Asian and Australian charities to be nominated by online casino sponsors Betfair, who’s head of poker Ben Fried called the gesture “extraordinarily generous.”

Guoga was also presented with a Merlion trophy as a symbol of hosts Singapore which he gave to local player Joshua Ang so that the trophy would remain in Singapore.

Final standings:

$451,700 – Tony Guoga

$233,200 – Joshua Ang (Pang Leng)

$116,600 – Lee Nelson

$102,000 – Samuel Lehtonen

$87,400 – Jeff Kimber

$72,900 – Mark Whent

$58,306 – Hans Vogl

$43,700 – Hendrik Dahlgaard

$29,200 – Brendan Walls

$17,500 – Neil Yong
