Asian Poker Tour Kicks Off

The inaugural Asian Poker Tour got under way in Singapore on Sunday as UK-based online gaming company Betfair and local operators Capital Events teamed up to host the six-day event.

The tournament is the first international poker tournament to be held in Singapore and according to Singapore Tourism Official Oliver Chong, who was quoted in the Straits Times newspaper, the event will bring “significant opportunities to profile Singapore.'

Indeed it puts the emerging Asian market firmly back in the spotlight as online operators search for alternatives to the US following the introduction of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

Singapore itself has been mooted as a potential online casino hub, with Singapore News Today reporting the possibilities of the country issuing online casino gaming licences, following last year’s lifting of the country’s 40-year casino ban.

The newspaper quotes Play Tech Asia president Tom Hall as saying, “Singapore has fantastic technical support and infrastructure, and given a choice between the Philippines and Singapore, many will probably prefer Singapore.”

The Asian Poker Tour main event gets under way tomorrow November 15 at the Meritus Mandarin Hotel, with organisers expecting more than 400 players including online qualifiers to battle for their share of the estimated $2 Million prize pool.
