Backgammon Premieres on TV

The historic game of Backgammon has taken a giant leap into mainstream culture this week as the World Series of Backgammon, sponsored by PartyGammon.com premiered on European TV screens.

The series, which runs over an eight week period, premiered on Eurosport on Monday November 6th (23.15 CET and 22.15 in the UK), and is the first time that competitive backgammon has been screened to a pan-European audience.

Andy Bell, Series Producer of The World Series of Backgammon said, 'We're confident that this series will provide exciting action, and informative programming for Europe's gaming fans. There's definitely a synergy between backgammon and other games of luck and chance; I'm certain that thousands of poker fans will join backgammon enthusiasts and tune in to watch this show.'

The series features match-play action from two tournaments taking place at the exclusive Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, where some of the world's best players take part in the Riviera Cup and the Nations' Cup. The Nations Cup features players in teams of two representing their countries in an international competition, with group stages and a knockout phase.

The Riviera Cup is an individual competition with a winning prize of €50,000, where players battle against the clock, being allowed only 20 min bank time and 9 seconds per move for 13 point matches in the 128 man tournament.

A PartyGammon spokesperson commented that the series hopes to inspire something of a renaissance for the game of backgammon.

“We see this coverage as the first step in finally putting backgammon on the sporting and gambling agenda once more. Backgammon is back on the up since its heyday in the late 1970’s, and we hope this as well as other exciting events which we will be sponsoring, such as the PartyGammon.com Million will encourage people to take up and enjoy this great game.”

PartyGammon.com, the newest offering in the PartyGaming Plc’s growing suite of online games, burst on the scene in June and has quickly moved to become the favourite of online backgammon players.
