Wednesday 5th May 2004 Victor Chandler unveils tax-free online betting in Ireland
Victor Chandler (VC), which has run betting shops since the 1960s and recently acquired 28 retail outlets in the UK has launched a new tax-free online betting services in Ireland. The move by the Gibraltar-based firm is expected to create 50 jobs in the Republic over the next 18 months.
The new Irish website will include an online casino, an online poker room, a simulated soccer betting game, a penalty shoot-out game and a wheel of fortune game.
While no investment figures were available, the firm said it also plans to make a ‘significant’ bricks and mortar investment in Ireland and open between 10 and 20 shops over the next few years and continue to invest large amounts in the Irish market.
VC seems to be taking the Paddy Power route. The competing Irish bookie, Paddy Power, which generates a lion’s share of revenues from shops, recently reported that their Internet division grew by 80 percent in 2003, highlighting the increase in popularity of online wagering.
‘With regard to future growth in Ireland, Victor Chandler has a long company history of being an investor in people and Ireland will be no exception. We plan to roll out nationwide as we recognize huge growth potential,’ said Ian Marmion, Head of Irish Operations, Victor Chandler. The group, which currently sports betting to online, telephone and retail customers in eight languages, moved its operations from London to Gibraltar in 1999 to introduce tax-free betting for international clients.
