Irish underdog turns to charity

Although Andrew Black is a poker legend in his home country, he is most famous for seeking refuge in a Buddhist monastery after failing to win the World Series of Poker twice in a row.

After a return from contemplation, Black again made the final table in the 2005 WSOP but failed to win and now Black is using his bad luck to raise the fortunes of the poor in Gambia.

Black will play at the Charity Poker Tournament at the Westwood Hotel on May 23rd to raise funds for the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) members, who are embarking on a mission to Gambia in August.

He will also field questions and dispense poker advice at a Poker Masterclass during the evening.

The 50 euro Re-buy tournament profits will enable Donal MacAonghusaand wife Fionnuala to spend a year teaching children in Gambia in their roles as volunteers for VSO.

The Charity Poker Tournament begins at 8pm and is sponsored by the Clifden Station House Hotel, the Orchid Restaurant, Pokerevents and Laptek Computers among others.

Although the Irish underdog has never won the WSOP, Black has won over $3,100,000 at smaller poker events.
