Great British hope in Shropshire amateur

Stephen Holden, an amateur poker player from Telford, has won the Nottingham leg of the Great British Poker Tour, picking up £20,000 in winnings and a seat at the main event this Autumn.

Holden proved an ace at Holdem, conquering 110 European and UK professionals to claim the top prize.

The Shropshire man beat some of the best of British, including pros such as Barny Boatman and Joe Beevers of the infamous Hendon Mob.

Holden said of his win: "I'm delighted - the dealer kept delivering great hands and some strong plays ensured that I came out on top. After putting in so much effort at card tables all around Nottinghamshire, this is a result to remember!

"The Great British Poker Tour is a brilliant chance for UK players to show off their skills in their own country. So many tours are focused abroad, so it's good to face some home-grown talent on our own turf. I'm now hoping I can bring the overall title home to Telford," he added.

If Holden wins the £2,500 buy-in Grand Final in Bristol, the 46-year-old Telford salesman will scoop £500,000. He has been playing poker for only three years but this latest win and his love of the game have convinced him that he should turn professional.
