Poker used to get golden oldies fit

Poker is being used to encourage senior citizens to exercise in Wabasha, Minnesota, where a poker 'walk' rather than a poker run is helping old people to get fit.

As part of the Fit City Wabasha initiative aimed at improving health levels of elderly residents, participants had to walk along a designated route picking up playing cards from various locations until they achieved a full poker hand.

After meeting at a coffee shop, the aged poker fans wound their way on a walk following the Mississippi River, collecting cards from volunteers along the way.

As if improved health wasn't enough incentive, prizes were on offer for the walker who had achieved the best poker hand by the end.

Eighty-nine-year-old Eunice Sulentich secured the prize with a full house, which may have led a rather jealous Bunnie Suliman to tell the Post Bulletin that she didn't care about the cards. "I think walking is more important than getting a good poker hand," the sprightly 77-year-old claimed. "If I hadn't gotten a card, it wouldn't have made one bit of difference."
