Davey Jones fails to lock other players out

David Jones looked likely to grab the most booty at the Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) in Dublin this weekend, but after nearly foiling 150 other players, the Yorkshireman lucked out.

In APAT's fifth event, it seemed that all bets were off after chip leaders Dave Compton and Bob Taylor could not see Jones off; but the amateur failed to take advantage on the final table.

At the final table, Brighton's Brendan Hartnett had acquired 245,000 worth of chips compared to Jones' 197,000 and although Paul Townsend from Witney started with as few as 189,000 chips, he still won through to third.

Jones had been the first player over the 50,000 chip mark, but failed to capitalise after he flopped straight against a missed nut flush draw. Irishman Donnelly, who did not make it through to the final table, crimped Jones' style, and perhaps sealed his fate, after becoming the chip leader at the dinner break.

Whatever the reason for Davey's sinking, one thing was for sure - Jacques Kieft was crowned the Irish Amateur poker champion, winning £3,000 and the EPT Season Four Seat.

Kieft only triumphed over Hartnett after a head's up that saw comparatively few pots but in the final hand, Kieft took 33 against Hartnett's King and Queen all-in pre flop.
