Big C wins big at WSOP tournament

Irishman, Ciaran O'Leary, has won the third event at this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP), scooping $727,012 of the prize pool, making it the second largest amount ever to be claimed by an Irishman at the WSOP.

Although Big C has tried his hand at six of the ten last WSOP annual events, he has never placed in the money before.

Despite this, the poker fan, who now lives in Seattle, was always a favourite with the crowd after each of the five times he was all-in at the final stage, O'Leary left the table, to huge dramatic effect, even though the poor Irishman was clearly rattled by the tension.

Yet at the start of the final table, the money will have been on Alex Jacob, who was chip leader with more than three million in chips, while most players had only around 800,000, but he could only manage third place in the end.

After only two hands in the Head's Up, Big C triumphed over California's Paul Evans, making it the second time he has taken second place at a WSOP event, after he was also pipped to the top prize in 2000.

The third event was also the third largest live tournament in poker history behind the 2005 and 2006 events and the largest WSOP poker event with 2,998 players attempting to enter the $1,500 buy-in no-limit hold championship event.

While money-making O'Leary enjoyed his success, the 2003 WSOP champion Chris Moneymaker only finished in 233rd place although he did receive a little pocket money for his troubles.
