Journalist pulls out poker joker

Poker scribe Jen Mason is better known for writing about poker tournaments than winning them, but the journalist had the luck of the Irish at the Green Joker Poker, wining more than 30,000 euros and poker victory.

The main event was a 1,000 euro buy-in, for which 126 poker fans turned up at a new poker club in the town of Drogheda, which only has 29,000 residents.

Several Brits had made it over for the Irish event, including other respected poker journalists Barry Carter and Jonathan Raab, although they need not have worried about hurrying as play was delayed by an hour for no other reason than the fact that Irish poker tournaments often start later than advertised.

After three days of poker action, Jen Mason proved to have the best poker knowledge, beating all the other poker scribes and regular players.

Although Drogheda is only a tiny town, the newest Drogheda Poker Club takes the total of poker clubs to three, while racing fans have access to as many as 15 off-track bookies.

Meanwhile Ireland will host several additional festivals this year with the European Poker Tour taking place in Dublin. Cork's Macau casino also holds frequent poker festivals.
