Guth comes good at WSOP event 36

An online poker professional from Vancouver has won event 36 of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), in his speciality game of Omaha High Low.

Scooping $363,216 for his $5,000 buy-in to the Omaha High-Low World Championship, 26-year-old John Guth beat an impressive field though no-one proved as accomplished as him.

On the second day of the tournament, Guth was able to eliminate some of the biggest names in poker, relegating Mike Matusow, Todd Brunson, and Annie Duke in quick succession.

Although Guth arrived at the final table with only the third biggest stack, after nine hours of struggling, he eventually managed to secure victory. Robert Stevanovski placed second winning $218,456 and David Flores managed third with $148,708.

Perhaps it was also due to the support of his fan base that helped Guth to victory. They were the most raucous bunch of supporters of any of the poker players to graduate as far as the final so far at the WSOP 2007.

"All I do all day long is sit at home and play Omaha High-Low," Guth told reporters after his triumph in the tournament. "That's my specialty. I will win the next Omaha High-Low tournament, too," he added. We shall have to see when event 42 comes up very shortly.
