Thursday 28th June 2007 Senior citizen canes Korfman
Ernest Bennett, 55, has been announced as the victor in the Seniors World Series of Poker Championship, beating Anthony Korfman and receiving a bracelet and $282,963 in cash winnings.
It only took Bennett five hours to win the final table, at which he arrived as chip leader by a large margin.
The retired dry cleaner from Encino would have walked away with $348,423 leaving second-placed Korfman with $217,503, but the pair had previously agreed a split deal.
Although this was Bennett's first World Series Of Poker victory, he has cashed in at more than 30 poker tournaments since he started playing professionally in 2004.
"Aggressive poker - that's the only way I know how to play," Bennett said after the tournament. "I'm always raising. Sometimes I have to try and slow it down, but I think the aggressive style works for me."
The minimum age required to participate in the Seniors Championship is 50. But at 55, Ernest Bennett was a mere spring chicken compared to some of the players at the final table, the oldest of whom was 71-years-old.
As 1,882 poker players entered the $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em event, it was the largest in history, beating last year's record of 1,184 entries by over 30 per cent.
