Poker Veterans Battle it Out at WSOP

A super aggressive playing style took Ernest Bennett all the way in the seniors’ event at the World Series of Poker. The $1,000 seniors’ event had an increase in player numbers of 30% on last year’s figure, with 1,882 entries. This boosted the total prize pool to an impressive $1,712,620 with $348,423 going to Bennett for his win. The age limit for the tournament stipulates that the player must be fifty or over. The oldest entrant was 71.

After winning the 55-year-old said, 'Aggressive poker – that's the only way I know how to play. I'm always raising. Sometimes I have to try and slow it down, but I think the aggressive style works for me.'

Having sold his business and retired, Bennett began to focus on playing poker, which he only got serious about learning five years ago. The aggressive strategy has earned him over 30 cashes since 2004, but he has never won a major event before this. He beat Tony Korfman into second place for a prize of $217,503, with Rod Clarida in third, winning $142,147. Bennett continued his domination of the table from a huge chip advantage at the start of the final day.
