Wednesday 4th July 2007 Billivara collects in record-breaking WSOP field
Chandrasekhar Billivara has pocketed $722,914 for his victory in the 49th event at the WSOP (World Series Of Poker), which had a record number of entrants for a non-main event competition.
As many as 3,151 players entered the starting field for the $1,500 No Limit Hold 'Em event, meaning that a prize pool of $4,301,115 was up for grabs.
The competition began as it meant to go on, in fiercely competitive fashion, with all but 218 players already knocked out by the end of the first day.
Taylor Douglas was chip leader at the start of the action on the final table with 2,618,000 while this year's champion-to-be had the smallest stack on the table with just 456,000 chips.
While Douglas reached the Head's up stage, Billavara's aggressive poker decided the victor relatively quickly. Douglas took $467,101 for his second place finish while John Hunt, who had fallen to Billivara earlier, took home $292,476 and the title of third place.
Quite a few records have been broken for numbers of entrants at this year's WSOP, which Harrah's has suggested may be down to the fact that payouts are smaller but spread among more players.
