Women Catch the Online Poker Bug

More and more women are becoming card sharks, says Victor Chandler, the U.K.’s fastest growing online poker website. Apparently, one in six new players registering with the site is female, up from virtually none just two years ago. According to Victor Chandler the typical female player tends to be between 24 and 35, Internet savvy, shops online and has a professional business career.

It seems that the Internet is allowing more and more women to experience the joys of poker and slowly shifting it away from its traditionally male domain. Research also suggests that women have certain personality traits which predispose them to be good players: a certain level-headed sang froid, in contrast with their testosterone fuelled, risk-taking male counterparts.

It comes as no surprise to learn, therefore, that last month saw the unveiling of www.womenspokerclub.com: a site aimed squarely at the female player. Maryan Morrison, the brains behind the site, said:

'Online you are allowed the anonymity to be anyone you want to be, which is one of the reasons why online poker is becoming increasingly popular among female players. Some women in the club have played online using male nicknames or masculine avatars to help balance their treatment while playing.'
