UK High Court to Re-examine New Casino Plans

The High Court is to reassess rules relating to the planned new UK casinos in response to a series of complaints from existing casino owners, who fear that the introduction of Las Vegas-style venues will do irretrievable damage to their businesses.

The three-day hearing, which will take place by May 25, will allow ample time for any key legislative changes to be put into place before the new regulations take effect on September 1.

A key concern voiced by casino operators is that the new-style casinos will house high earning slot machines that will give them an unfair advantage. The British Casino Association (BCA) said it was asking the High Court to order the Secretary of State to review the new rules.

'The additional entitlements given to the 17 new casinos will seriously threaten many long established businesses,' said BCA chairman Penny Cobham.

'The Association strongly believes that the Secretary of State has erred in considering and determining the arrangements for existing casinos in such a way that gives rise to very serious concerns about their impact and lawfulness,' the BCA added.
