WSOP Sees NHL Interest

A former National Hockey League (NHL) player that pleaded guilty to charges of financing a nationwide sports gambling ring, took part in this week�s World Series Of Poker (WSOP) event in Las Vegas.

Canadian Rick Tocchet pleaded guilty in May to charges of third-degree conspiracy and the promotion of gambling for his part in the operation of a nationwide gambling ring, after an investigation spearheaded by New Jersey State Police codenamed Operation Slapshot.

Tocchet is due to be sentenced in mid-August and has since taken indefinite leave from his current job as the assistant coach for the Phoenix Coyotes NHL team. The former MVP and 18-year veteran could receive up to ten years in prison and a $500,000 fine, and was eliminated on Day 2A of the event.

Another WSOP player in the headlines was Janet Jones, the wife of former NHL great Wayne Gretzky. The former Playboy cover girl was also implicated in Operation Slapshot and played on Day 1A before losing. It was alleged that the American had used Tocchet to wager upwards of $500,000 on National Football League games but no criminal charges were ever filed.
