WSOP Main Event Numbers Down on 2006

In the Main Event of the World Series of Poker, Vinnie Vinh’s empty chair, which is posting blinds and folding in his absence, has outlasted Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Greg Raymer, Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi, Robert Williamson III, Chip Reese, Cyndy Violette and Jamie Gold, who were all eliminated before the second stage of the tournament.

“It hurts of course,” said Brunson, “It’s the prestige of these tournaments, particularly this one, that everybody’s concerned with. Everyone’s trying to win bracelets a lot more than money.” Brunson narrowly missed equalling Phil Hellmuth’s record eleventh bracelet last week.

However, Hellmuth himself ‘crashed’ out not long after arriving two hours late. In his usual style, he criticised the loose play of his opponents, saying: “They wanted to give me their money, but the deck wouldn’t let them.”

The crowd was merciless with Jamie Gold, breaking into spontaneous applause when his elimination was announced over the loud speaker.

Although a massive 6,358 players are competing for the main event bracelet, this year’s tournament is 28% smaller than last year’s. The prize pool is also smaller – a total of $59,784,954, with $8.25 million going to the overall winner. At least 50% of the field has already been eliminated.
