Tuesday 10th July 2007 Bluff Europe’s Poker in The Park Takes Leicester Square
The people of London were out in force this weekend as the Tour de France wheeled its way through the city, but it was another event that was attracting the attention of the hordes of people in Leicester Square on Friday.
Famous for its film premieres, Leicester Square played host to a poker premiere as Bluff Europe Magazine held its ‘Poker in the Park’ event, in association with the World Poker Tour (WPT).
Hundreds of people turned out for a series of play-for-fun mini-tournaments as well as poker tutorials for those wishing to develop their game, or even learn the basics. Players were joined at the tables by WPT Board Member, Hollywood actress and poker player Mimi Rogers.
The day also coincided with Bluff Europe Magazine recognising London as the European capital of poker for 2007. The event was officially opened with the presentation of a plaque to Labour Peer Lord Lipsey, who accepted the honour on behalf of the city.
“I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of the city of London,” said Lord Lipsey, MP and Vice Chair, Parliamentary Betting & Gaming Group. “London has truly established itself as THE poker destination in the 21st Century. The opportunities to play here now are even greater with the World Series of Poker Europe coming to London in September.”
Editor-in-Chief of Bluff Europe, Michael Caselli added to Lord Lipsey’s comments, “The event accomplished exactly what we set out to do,” he said. “We have proved that poker is a massive sport, maybe even bigger than we originally thought. The response from the public has been immense.”
Steve Lipscomb, WPT president, founder and CEO, added, “The World Poker Tour is honoured to be here, and we appreciate Bluff Europe magazine helping to make this event happen. Poker in the Park was a great way to bring poker to fans in London. We are honoured to have been part of this event.”
