Michael Graves is $1000 NLH re-buy champ

Team Bodog player Michael Graves has won the No-Limit Hold’em with re-buys tournament at the World Series of Poker. This is the first World Series for the 23-year-old medical student, (Dr Graves?) but much is being made of his talent and he is not expected to drop out of the professional circuit any time soon. Graves made it to the final table just ahead of two other players who also came with over a million in chips.

The re-buy tournament allows players to purchase more chips when their stack runs out for a limited period at the start of the tournament. This swelled prize pool to $ 3,226,609. Graves himself bought in four times, and managed to make it through some confusion over the WSOP rules governing the rebuy process. Tempted to stay in beyond their budget, some players wanted time to visit ATM’s or borrow from friends. However, once the intention to rebuy has been announced a player must complete the transaction and be back in their seat before play returns to them, otherwise they will be eliminated.

The heads-up game saw Graves outsmart Theo Tran, who was the third of the big stacks at the start of play. Tran, another younger player, won the LA Poker Classic this year and has made five other significant tournament cashes so far. The second place earned him $387,193.
