Aussie rules Idol's poker face not ok

The winner of Australian Idol, Shannon Noll, has been criticised for his decision to promote the Australian Poker League (APL).

Dr Matthew Rockloff of the Central Queensland University claims that it was a bad move as most of Noll's fans were likely to be youngsters and should not be exposed to gambling.

The doc said that evidence showed that people who become pathologically addicted to gambling have generally been exposed to it as youngsters.

His rebuke of the Australian Idol seems bizarre, as the APL can hardly be considered gambling as it is a 'free to play' organisation in which no money changes hands. Furthermore poker players are required to be at least 18 years old before they can join the APL. Yet Dr Rockloff insisted that gambling was intrinsically linked with poker.

Meanwhile Shannon told Confidential that in his 18 months of playing the game, he never did so for money. "It doesn't cost you anything and it's a social event so people can get out and talk and meet new people," he said. And on NEWS.com.au he rather sweetly compared poker to a gentle game of bingo but "more complicated".
