Barney Frank Calls On People Power

The US politician behind a proposed bill that would repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has called for Americans to contact their local representatives and ask that they support his measures.

Congressman Barney Frank has been on the interview circuit following hearings on his House of Representatives (HR) 2046 bill, officially known as the Internet Gambling Regulatory and Enforcement Act (IGREA) 2007, which would license and regulate online gambling in the United States. Online poker and gambling companies licensed under Frank's bill would be exempt from UIGEA, which was passed in October.

'Call your Representative and your Senators and tell them to get out of your life,' said the Massachusetts Democrat.

'As the average American understands what's happened, my colleagues are going to be told, 'listen you made a mistake and you butt out of my business' and at that point I think we may be able to change it.'

The number of House Representatives that have publicly endorsed Frank’s bill grew this week with California Democrats Howard L Berman and Bob Filner voicing their support alongside James McGovern, a Democrat from Frank’s home state. This brings the total number of votes for HR 2046 to 23 with 218 needed in order for Frank’s bill to be passed on to the Senate for ratification. Currently, Frank’s Democrat Party controls 53 percent of the House’s 435 seats.
