Second-placed WSOP champ no show-off

Tuan Lam, who placed second at this year's World Series Of Poker (WSOP), has said that he doesn't want the $4,840,981 of prize money to change him.

Lam arrived in Canada 20 years ago as a 'boat person' to seek his fortune after leaving his family behind in Vietnam under the Communist regime.

He started work as a lumberjack for $6.50 an hour and had a series of jobs that paid a pittance before he became a professional poker player.

While Lam, now living in Mississauga, now has an enviable fortune, he told the Globe and Mail: "I've been through a rough life. I feel very happy to have won this kind of money." But he added: "I want a normal life. I don't want to show off or anything like that."

He told of how he went shopping and saw a beautiful Rolex watch. "I really loved it," he said. But added that he did not splash out on it: "No, it's too much. $7,000 for a watch?"

However it has been reported that Lam will send $500,000 back to his home village, Bao Trinh, and that some of the money will be spent on a Buddhist shrine.
