Poker as skill ruling is great for Dane

Frederik Hosstrup, president of the Danish Poker Federation, has had his bacon saved after a Danish judge ruled that poker is a game of skill, thereby acquitting Hosstrup of organising illegal gambling games, after he ran poker tournaments in Denmark.

Currently, games in which the organisers try to achieve a commercial profit are considered illegal gambling in Denmark. Yet Henrik Hoffmann, Hosstrup's lawyer managed to persuade the judge that poker must be considered a game of skill because: "You can win in poker based on being clever enough to hide your strategy, even though you might have a fairly poor hand".

This case may have far-reaching implications in Scandinavia, which has some of the strictest laws on gambling in the world.

The news comes after Russian judges declared that poker was a game of skill rather than chance in April and just as a skill games exception bill is being proposed in the US.
