Wednesday 18th July 2007 One Big Winner But Lots of Success Stories at the WSOP
Of course the really big success story at the WSOP this year was psychologist Jerry Yang winning the Main Event, walking away with over $8 million and the championship bracelet – the most coveted prize in the poker world.
While only one of the 8,000 players that paid the $10,000 registration fee can win first prize, thousands are proud to just make it to the championship tournament. If they aren’t eliminated in the first round, that’s a success in itself.
One such player is Robert P., a grocery story manager from northern California. Not an extremely experienced or aggressive player, Robert got lucky one night and won a WSOP satellite tournament hosted by PlayersOnly.com. He could have just pocketed his $12,000 prize that night but he decided to use it to register and play in the Big One in Las Vegas this month.
“I was knocked out of the tournament after 12 hours of play,” said Robert from his room at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas following his elimination, “But let me tell ya, it was a dream come true!”
“I was doing really well. I had about $70K in chips at one point, but I lost about 75% of my stack to a bad beat and never recovered. Had I won that pot I would have been near the chip lead. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime.'
'The most memorable experience was watching Doyle Brunson play at the feature table -- and I got to meet one of my heroes, Mike Sexton! I also got a hug from Jennifer Harmon.'
'I will surely be back. Hopefully from another online satellite! It was sure nice to sit and play in the biggest poker tournament in the world, and for a while, I felt like I really belonged. I didn’t win any money but I’d say my trip was a success!”
