Poker bikers bid to help hospice

Motorcycling enthusiasts and poker fans have helped to raise $8,000 for the Hospice of Central Kentucky, tripling the funds generated last year by the Poker Run and Memory Ride.

And Lisa Sanford, director of development for the hospice said that more cheques were expected at a later date. "Gosh, I'm so excited. This is just what we needed," she said. "I just can't get over the community support."

Around 150 bikers left Central Hardin High School at noon, riding to Saunders Spring in Radcliff and collecting playing cards at various stops along the way.

Charlotte Wayne won $200 when the five cards she collected produced a straight despite this being her first year in the poker run. Ms Wayne said she joined the run because of a friend who has cancer and said she would "buy a lot of toys" with the money.

After four years of the poker run, the fundraiser has grown each time and although it is one of the smaller hospice events, Sanford said: "We would like for it to become one of our larger ones."

Before the bikers left, balloons were released with cancer patients' names on them.

Hospice worker Sandy Walby, who helped organise the event, said: "Bikers are good people."
