Ads Increase for I-Gaming

Much of the betting done on yesterday’s Super Bowl Game was done on the Internet, despite the fact that the Bush administration is running a crackdown on media companies who run advertisements for online gambling sites. Kate Kaye, contributing an article to Media Daily News, predicted before the big game that “prominent web media outlets” such as MSNCB.com and Lycos “could lead the way,” despite the frown that come from places such as the White House.

Michael Schroeter, the brand manager for BetWWTS.com, said, “The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events for total wagers and total volume. ” Schroeter expected to take in more than the $3 million in Internet turnover taken in last year’s Super Bowl.

Kaye reported that “Various estimates show that there are as many as 2,000 Internet gambling sites currently operating.”

With that sort of interest in online gambling, the question industry analysts and observers are asking is whether U.S. media companies will knuckle under to the government, or dare to take on ads for web sportsbooks, such as BetWWTS.com. Last September, the U.S. Justice Department, headed by Attorney General John Ashcroft, “issued a subpoena to the operator of a portal site to testify before a grand jury regarding Internet gambling ads,” Kaye wrote.

Schroeter, of BetWWTS.com said to that: “It hasn't curbed our online ad spending.”

Ads for overseas online gambling venues can be found within the MSNBC.com's sports channel. There, the World Sports Exchange invites the Internet traveler to “Rest Easy. You've found the finest, no nonsense wagering around.”

MSNBC.com also plainly features banners and “skyscraper ads” for PartyPoker.com.
