Three More Support Internet Gambling Regulation

In the US, support for House of Representatives (HR) Bill 2046, also known as the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) 2007, has grown again this week with three influential Congressman agreeing to support the legislation.

IGREA was introduced in April by Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank and would license and regulate online gambling in the United States. Online poker and gambling companies licensed under Frank's bill would be exempt from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was passed in October.

The latest to voice their support are Hawaiian Democrat Neil Abercrombie alongside California Democrats Joe Baca and Lynn Woolsey. Baca serves on the House Financial Services Committee, of which Frank is Chairman, and the House Agriculture and House Natural Resources committees. Woolsey serves on the Education and Labor, Science and Technology and Foreign Affairs committees while Abercrombie also serves on the House Natural Resources Committee as well as the Armed Services Committee.

The addition of the latest Representatives increases the current list of co-sponsors to 35, up from the Bill's original eleven when Frank first introduced the Act to the House. The Bill needs a total vote of 218 in order to be passed on to the Senate for ratification and, currently, Frank’s Democrat Party controls 53 percent of the House’s 435 seats.
