China joins poker tour, but all bets are off

The China Leisure Sports Administrative Centre (CLSAC) has announced the launch of the country's first National Traktor Poker Tournament, although there will be no betting allowed on the event.

In a five-year partnership with the World Poker Tour (WPT), CLSAC the first Season of the Tour will start in the autumn and should visit 15 locations around China with the Grand Final in early 2008.

Traktor Poker, known as Tuo La Ji, is China's most popular poker game and was granted the status of a sport in 2002. The move was important in bringing poker to the country, as the government does not allow gambling.

As such, there will be no betting allowed in China and it is unclear what stakes will be played for.

The tour will be promoted by WPT via sponsorship and merchandise and the event will be televised.

"This marketing partnership with the WPT is a serious commitment for the CLSAC," said Mr. Hu Jianguo, director general of CLSAC. "We look forward to a long-term partnership with the WPT, expanding this unique sport and showcasing the wisdom and teamwork skills of the Chinese people to the world."

Steve Lipscomb, CEO of WPT attended the signing ceremony in Beijing. He said: "Poker, especially Tuo La Ji poker, requires a great amount of skill and passion, both key ingredients in creating dynamic and engaging sports television. We look forward to applying our expertise revolutionising televised poker in the United States to help bring this exciting Sport to Chinese television for the first time."
