Amazon.com’s patent could affect online casinos

The e-commerce vendor, Amazon.com's patented 'one click method’ which allows online shoppers to purchase books, CDs with just one click after logging in and claims to dramatically enhance user navigation on a website could affect online says a lawer. If Amazon.com’s patent is stretched too far however, it could affect user patterns in online gambling sites says Bryan Mudge, a partner at Kenyon & Kenyon, a law firm specializing in intellectual property.

While patents can be a good thing in ensuring that the intellectual property of the inventor or the company are safe guarded, they can also have far reaching if stretched too far. While Amazon.com does not offer or participate in the online gambling segment, it has filed lawsuits against few websites who Amazon claimed had infringed on its patents.

Mudge says: 'consider a player betting to stay in a multi-round poker game. The player keeps anteing up, anticipating that he'll get a winning hand. But he doesn't need to evaluate the entire game from the start; he can fold at any time. All he needs to do is evaluate the cost of taking the next step, balanced against the possibility of winning the entire pot.

Patents like one-click could affect online gambling sites, where winning is dependent on select playing patterns or in others clicking the right number of clicks. Though Amazon hasn’t approached any online casino for patent-infringement, the possibility is still valid as companies try hard to capitalize on their intellectual property and protect their turf.
