South Africa to join the online fun

South Africa is set to join the online poker community, as the government decides to legalise web-based gaming.

Following a hard-fought battle between the South African Parliament and the Department for Trade and Industry, the National Gambling Amendment Bill has been approved and passed by the government.

Although online operators will have to apply for a national license for both its equipment and staff, South African poker fans will now be able to join in the fun online.

According to the Gaming Intelligence Group, gambling operators will also be obliged, under the Bill, to locate interactive gambling kit within the Republic of South Africa.

This news comes after members of the African National Congress attempted to block the Bill last month, branding poker as "an evil activity".

Luckily, the government did not decide to follow the example of the United States and ban online gaming, although the Bill must now pass to the National Council of Provinces for approval. After this, President Thabo Mbeki should officially set the new law in stone.
